Group Therapy

Treatment groups are an essential component of our treatment program. Our program schedule provides a variety of different types of groups designed to support recovery. Groups vary in terms of both format and content. Some groups are more educational and may be run in a "lecture style" format, while others are discussion-based where participants are encouraged to discuss issues or process feelings. Still others may be expressive in nature in which participants are encouraged to work through issues or process feelings utilizing various activities or creative techniques. Finally, some treatment groups, such as meal groups and therapeutic outings give participants the opportunity to practice skills in a "hands-on" manner. All groups are considered integral to treatment.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Group
DBT is an educational group that teaches participants skills in four important areas: mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotional regulation, and distress tolerance. This group is specifically designed for individuals who have difficulties with self-harm, emotional dysregulation and impulse control.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Group
CBT provides participants the opportunity examine connections between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and utilizes various exercises in order to modify maladaptive patterns. Group leaders may provide a specific theme or topic, which participants are encouraged to relate to and discuss.

Process Group
This group provides patients the opportunity to discuss and work through feelings, issues and conflicts with which they are dealing. Patient or group leaders may raise themes for discussion. All group members are highly encouraged to share. Group leaders help to maintain the focus of the discussion and provide a constructive, positive environment.

Self-Image Group
This group enables patients to address and challenge distortions and esteem problems related to their bodies utilizing various experiential techniques, including mirror work. Patients are supported in engaging in various forms of expression including art, music, poetry, writing, movement, psychodrama and collage.

Nutrition Group
This is an educational group in which patients learn about and discuss issues related to food, nutrition, metabolism, weight, and eating. Patients work on planning menus, have dinner together once a week, and visit restaurants monthly.
