Issues for Men

Traditionally considered "women’s issues," eating disorders, body image dissatisfaction, excessive exercise, and weight preoccupation have significantly increased in boys and men in recent years.

In fact, the male population of eating disorder patients has grown by at least 6% in the last ten years. While most women experience extreme social pressures to be thin, men often feel pressured to develop a lean muscular body. This can lead to Binge Eating Disorder, Bulimia, or Body Dysmorphic Disorder, often referred to as "reverse anorexia" because of the body image distortions present.

Unfortunately, because of the shame and stigma associated with having a problem typically affecting women, men often keep their struggles with eating disorders hidden. Tragically, this prolongs these potentially life-threatening illnesses. Early intervention and treatment significantly improve the likelihood of full recovery.

There is a safe, supportive place to recover from these devastating problems. Call the New Orleans Center for Eating Disorders to schedule an assessment.
