What are eating disorders?
Eating
disorders are complex, life-threatening illnesses involving an extreme
obsession with food, weight, and appearance that adversely impact
a person’s health, relationships and daily activities. While
most commonly affecting young women, eating disorders are widespread
and impact both males and females of all ages. Eating disorders often
develop as a way to deal with the conflicts and struggles of life
and may be used as a way to express control when life itself feels
out of control.
They include Anorexia
Nervosa, Bulimia
Nervosa and Binge
Eating Disorder.
Eating disorders are chronic, progressive and often fatal if left
untreated. Unfortunately, most people with an eating disorder deny
it, but an eating disorder that is recognized can be effectively treated.
Only a minority of eating disorder patients require inpatient or residential
treatment. Outpatient treatment is recommended in most cases which
do not present medical or psychiatric crises. In addition, outpatient
treatment allows individuals to continue to participate in their daily
lives and provides an opportunity to practice and generalize skills
obtained during treatment.
